When a citizen doesn’t obey a court’s judgment voluntarily, a court may issue a
Writ of Execution instructing a Sheriff to enforce the court’s order by force, if necessary. It only happens when someone willfully refuses to listen to the court’s orders and comply. Unbelievably, that is exactly what is happening in Edgewood and the scofflaw is the ex-Mayor, John Bassett! WATCH: video on court order
Once again, Bassett is thumbing his nose at the Judge and has called a Special Meeting this Monday, November 2, 2020, to try to get approval from the Governing Body to further fight the court’s orders removing him from office and to have us, the taxpayers, pay for it!
• Bassett DID violate the New Mexico Constitution by profiting
from public funds and built a sewer line onto Bassett lands.
• Bassett DID violate the town’s nepotism ordinance by appointing his first cousin to the planning and zoning commission and change zoning laws that now benefit Bassett land.
WHY should taxpayer money be spent to defend him and his illegal acts AGAINST the town? Against US? Bassett’s lack of respect for the law, the community, and for the court are putting the Town of Edgewood in a costly legal situation.
There is no benefit whatsoever to the town or its citizens by refusing to enforce our town’s own Nepotism ordinance. The Nepotism ordinance was adopted to thwart the very type of corruption we have seen under Bassett. There is only one person who would benefit from fighting the enforcement of the ordinance, the one person who broke it, John Bassett! And now he has the nerve to expect us to pay for his defense too!
To proceed, Bassett needs two elected councilors to go along with his convoluted position. Councilors Linda Holle and John Abrams have voted lock-step with Bassett in the past and have enabled him in his corrupt acts against the citizens. Their participation could be considered conspiracy and opens the town to further legal action. It also jeopardizes their positions on the governing body because violating a court order and not enforcing a town ordinance is malfeasance in office. Such clear violations of their oath of office subjects them to recall or removal from office.
One has to wonder, why Holle and Abrams have more loyalty to a person who has repeatedly shown disregard for the law, the opinions of the community, and the court rather than to the citizens they were elected to serve?
