The town’s governing body has failed to hold a single regular meeting to conduct official town business since October 14 (Oct 28, Nov 11, and Nov 25 were cancelled).
That means no town business is being openly conducted, no opportunities for public input, and no way for the public to follow town financial and departmental activities.
John Abrams, mayor pro tem, is acting more like a placeholder than an elected official fulfilling the duties required by law.
In 2020, five regular meetings have been cancelled outright and nine special meetings were called. Since April, all town meetings have been held by teleconference with the only video access provided to The Independent newspaper which posts the meetings on the paper’s Facebook page.
That approach is far inferior to industry standards for group meetings such as Zoom or Go To Meeting which allow for better sound quality and attendee participation. As easy as such options are, could it be that some in town government do not want the community to be engaged, do not want the public to be able to easily provide input to the governing body?
