A stealth effort is afoot to tear down the Edgewood Elementary building without any public input. The public needs to SPEAK UP before it’s too late!
As taxpayers, we should be asking, “Why not CONTINUE TO make use of this building for the Edgewood community until there are firm and funded plans to replace it?”
Let’s find a way to RE-PURPOSE this 53,000 sq ft taxpayer-funded building to serve the Edgewood community. Encourage MESD (Moriarty-Edgewood School District), Town of Edgewood, and Santa Fe County to work together and share costs to keep this building and serve the residents of the Edgewood/Santa Fe County area.
There are NO funded, firm plans to build new, just to tear down and leave an empty parcel to become overgrown and ignored. However, the Superintendent had publicly promised over and over that the building would be maintained and re-purposed. Children DO use this building – a preschool and the Rt 66 Arts Alliance program and through other community events/activities. Edgewood does not have a community center and playground to utilize that is this large.
If the building is torn down Edgewood would lose AGAIN, no community-serving facility, potential loss of the much-needed pre-school that occupies the south building, and no gym or space for community recreational uses. The District receives mil levy and bond funding through OUR PROPERTY TAXES to maintain this building and grounds. Maintaining this building does NOT impact teacher salaries or student operations – there are specific taxes for repairs, maintenance, and improvements.
SPEAK UP – Tues, March 15 at 7pm
AT: Moriarty-Edgewood School Board Meeting
WHEN: Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00pm
WHERE: 2422 Old Route 66, Moriarty (old Mountainview Elementary/District Offices)
MESD wants to build a $5M+ sports complex in Moriarty. But they want to tear down Edgewood Elementary so they don’t have to do routine maintenance? With a little creative effort and multi-agency cooperation, the Edgewood Elementary building could serve the community in numerous ways!
It’s sad that we are even having to fight for scraps, but the imbalance and lack of fairness in how our tax dollars are being spent needs attention from the Edgewood community. Saving Edgewood Elementary should not have to be a rallying cry, but Edgewood area residents should get SOMETHING for all our tax dollars. If ever the District obtained funding to build new, the old building could be torn down at that time.
Remember to Speak Up during public comment at the Moriarty-Edgewood School Board meeting on Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00pm Public Comment.
If you can’t attend in person, please send an email to the school Board of Education (OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO DO THE PEOPLE’S WILL) and superintendent ASAP:
