Citizens of Edgewood have long envisioned a community that retains its small town, rural, friendly feeling while incorporating local conveniences, restaurants, and recreational opportunities that make for a comfortable lifestyle. Edgewood has many assets, including beautiful vistas, open spaces, and easy access to New Mexico’s largest city (Albuquerque) and its state capitol (Santa Fe). This creates a near perfect environment for work opportunities and quality of life at home.
Community meeting after community meeting over a twenty year period has continued to reveal that residents’ top priorities remain: decent roads, recreational opportunities, public safety, rural character, and reasonable shopping, services, and restaurants available locally. People here value the small town feel and seek to maintain that through a mix of locally-owned business and familiar brand name stores. There is a strong desire for a “town center” as well as a retail/commercial district that is confined primarily to historic Route 66 and NM 344. A cohesive community identity can be achieved by utilizing the vision for Edgewood demonstrated in strategic ways and locations throughout town. One example is hitching posts, as n equestrian community, the ability to ride throughout town and make stops is charming and functional. Edgewood actually has hitching posts at the post office and behind Walmart.
CORE’s hope is that the incoming Edgewood Commission will value the community’s vision and seek to finally develop it in a meaningful way.
